Argentina's four main farming unions are flexing their muscles ahead
of presidential elections in October. With everything suggesting that President
Cristina Fernández will seek re-election, and polls putting her in a strong
position to win, the farming unions seem intent on influencing the outcome. They
are well aware that the widespread strikes they staged in 2008 contributed in no
small part to the setback suffered by the government in the 2009 legislative
elections. The government is also well aware of this, and will do all it can to
